Lego announces Mindstorms EV3

Postby positron96 » Wed Jan 09, 2013 5:52 am

Hey there! Just found some big news:
Mindstorms EV3 is coming!
Image
As I see, compared to NXTs the new version has brutal look, different parts (2 big servos and 1 small, different set of sensors), Linux OS under the hood and USB with Host mode.

Hi,
It's just to let you know that lego has unveiled their new Mindstorms kit 'Mindstorms EV3' at the CES in Las Vegas.
Here is an article of CNet:

We're aware of it ;-)
It sure looks like a very capable piece of hardware.

It does look very exiting. Running on Linux, it should in theory allow running Java almost out of the box. Any plans for a Lejos an this new device?

We are certainly thinking about it. As you say Java may not be a problem. However there is then the issue of talking to the non-standard hardware (sensors etc), and having things like the leJOS robotics classes available.

We are using lejos on NXTs to teach Java to pupils since 2006(?). Now I've been on a LEGO Education workshop in Germany were the EV3 has been introduced. After the workshop I asked about Linux support for the LEGO Mindstorms Education EV3-Software which was negated (as I expected). I also asked about support for third-party software like lejos and I've been assured that LEGO is supporting those communities in porting their environments to EV3. After reading this thread I have doubts about this statement. Seems like the lejos devs did not even start to work on EV3?

We would like to order an EV3 for testing purpose, but without lejos support it is useless for us. So, could you please give some details about your plans if and when you will support EV3?

That's good news!

We ordered one EV3 and expect it to be delivered in the first half of September. Maybe you will need some beta testers?
