how to find API corresponding to a version number?

At my school, IT won't install the latest version. We are using version .85 and need the corresponding API.

That's a pity. However, you can download the ZIP for windows, unpack it, and use it. leJOS doesn't need to be installed using the installer.
(Well, there's one thing: you probably need to override the NXJ_HOME variable. But that shouldn't be a problem either.)

However, if you want to keep out of trouble, there is
http://lejos.sourceforge.net/nxt/nxj/api0.8.5/
http://lejos.sourceforge.net/nxt/pc/api0.8.5/
But it might be deleted soon.

A version of the documentation should also be included in the 0.8.5 download. Take a look at
%NXJ_HOME%\projects\classes\doc\index.html
%NXJ_HOME%\projects\pccomms\doc\index.html
