I wonder if there is any way to switch off the NXT brick completely via iCommand - just like lejos used to switch off the brick after running a program.
Is there an appropriate method to call or any other way to achieve this?

The Lego Communication Protocol has no command for powering off the brick as far as I could tell. It would probably be possible using the IO-Map commands to access the memory directly.
