Buying latest Lego Robot

Postby ambi » Sat Jul 23, 2011 10:09 pm

Hi,

I teach programming at a University and would like to introduce lego robots to teach programming using Java. I have never used lego robot before but would like to buy the latest lego robot and which can be used with leJOS java. Any recommendation on which lego robot should I buy and from where?

My understanding is that "LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT 2.0" is the latest available. But it is priced differently on lego website and amazon.co.uk. Price on lego website is £234.99 but price on amazon.co.uk is £183.75.

Any idea why the prices are different? If the product offered is absolutely same then ofcourse I would like to buy it from amazon as it is cheaper there.

Thanks,
Ambi.

There are the "retail" version (the one you seem to have found already, it's usually called Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0) and the educational versions. The retail version does not include the recharcable Li-Ion battery which I recommend. However, the retail and educational kits are somewhat different with regards to the parts included.

Hi,

Thanks. What is the difference between the robot you get from the following two sources? To me both seem exactly same version "Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0" except the price?

1. Price: £234.99, Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0
http://shop.lego.com/en-GB/LEGO-MINDSTORMS-NXT-2-0-8547

2. Price: £183.75, Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LEGO-8547-Minds ... 647&sr=8-1

Also I had a look at the educational "9797 LEGO MINDSTORMS Education Base Set". To me this education set seem to contain everything that is contained in "Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0" plus the rechargable battery? Am I correct or am I missing something?

This educational set is priced £245.93 while the Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 on amazon.co.uk is just £183.75. Is the extra money just for the rechargable battery?

Thanks,
Ambi.

I think, this is the wrong place to ask this question. How should I know? However, The picture on amazone shows product 8547. So yes, that should be the same box as sold by Lego.

The educational set doesn't contain the color sensor, as far as I'm aware. The educational set also doesn't contain the NXT-G software. The software is sold separately. The retail kit contains NXT-G 2.0 while the educational version of the software is NXT-G 2.1. The educational version of NXT-G is also a little bit different from the retail version. I don't remember the exact difference. You should google that.

The education set also comes with a different parts set and has a plastic storage box to keep all of the parts organized...

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I have now got the retail version from amazon. I will start coding on it soon.
