Any hope for Gabage Collector in future Lejos?

Title says it all :)

I am a Java programmer in real life and it kills me that I can't use real objects in Lejos :)

You can use real objects, just not as local variables.
A pain, I admit, but not life threatening.

I plan to add garbage collection sometime, but I want to get the other deficiencies of leJOS NXJ fixed before I attempt big changes to the VM.

There's a JVM that has similar memory requirements to leJOS and also has a garbage collector:

This might serve as inspiration for a leJOS NXJ garbage collector.

I think that many people want a garbage collector. For example, I cant use lejos because I must use some algorithms (class files) which use local variables extensively. I hoped that lejos 0.4 would bring a garbage collector but it didnt.

When do you plan to implement the garbage collector?

If you are looking for a time-line, that is very hard to predict. We can't tell you when it will be done because we don't know ourselves. Just a rough guess, the revisions/fixes to leJOS NXJ will probably take at least until Christmas. But don't be surprised if the garbage collector doesn't appear until mid-2008 or suddenly someone volunteers to implement it and it's ready before the end of 2007. That's the way these open source projects go.
