Ubuntu virtual image setup

Postby Aswin » Fri Sep 06, 2013 7:33 am

Hi,

What is the password for user ubuntu?

I installed VB and Ubuntu. But I am unable to log into ubuntu as I do not have a password. I installed the image called ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386 from the VB website, the same as is mentioned in the Wiki. I have a user called ubuntu, password unknown and a guest account. The guest account doesn't allow me to do much.
(According to the VB website there should be a user called adminuser with a password adminuser. I don't have it.)

To be honest I'm not sure what is going on here. I didn't have any of these problems using the VirtualBoxes image...

When you installed the VM it should have asked you to create an account, did you do this? If so this account should be an admin account and it will have full admin priv. You will need to use sudo to obtain these priv, (which will require you to enter the password you used when you created the user).

If the above is not the case it may be easier just to go back delete your VM and re-start the process, or just create a new VM and use the standard ubunto ISO disk image to create it. You may not be able to create a second VM using the the VirtualBoxes disk image as you are not allowed to have two virtual disk images with the same ID.

Hi,

I downloaded the Ubuntu image again and added it to VB, same thing.
I downloaded another image of Ubuntu (12.04), same thing.
I am never asked to add a user. When should this happen and what program should ask me VB or Ubuntu?

Should be part of the Ubuntu setup. When I get chance I'll try it, though I will have to set things up on another machine.

Actually now I think about it and having read the VirtualBoxes site are you sure you can't just login as user "ubuntu" password "reverse" I can certainly do that on my system, so maybe I did that and then created my own user from there (it is a few months ago now that I set all of this up). Are you sure the above login does not work?
