sd-card-image

Postby cfin » Fri Oct 25, 2013 8:10 pm

Hello,
I have some problems creating the sd-card image by myself, because I can't get ubuntu working with my graphic card. Is it possible, that someone could copy me an already created sd-card image?
In general that seems easier to provide a finished image, instead averybody has to create an own image.

Thank you very much. I would really like to start executing java programs on the ev3.

Hi, the problem with custom images is the WIFI settings. Every user has to configurate the file: wpa_supplicant.conf
Althougth you don't have a Graphical session with Ubuntu, it is not a problem, because you only need a shell.

Do you have a MicroSD formatted using the script?

Cheers

Hello, I have now managed to get it working.

For everyone, who might have the same problem. Enabling 3d acceleration in virtualBox worked for me only after first boot without it and installing the guest extensions. After that I could enable 3d acceleration. Since I tried it with three different pcs, it might be a common problem.

Creating an own sd-card image only for setting a custom config file ist indeed a big overhead. Is there no other way to connect to the EV3 using a cable? Then you could use a normalized image and edit or replace the config file with the cable connection.

But for me its now ok, I am just thinking how to make it easier for other people.

I think this is less of an issue than it could be. The EV3 will boot correctly even if there is a bad wireless config, it just won't connect to wireless. Since you can connect to the EV3 with a USB cable, you can then modify the wpa_supplicant.conf file to work with your wireless network. That actually sounds like a good candidate for a bit of automation... Anyhow, this would allow someone to easily use a pre-made image.

I suspect the bigger issue might be that Oracle wouldn't want the java version to be "redistributed" in this form. But IANAL, so don't take my advice :)

Hi,

yes, I agree with you. In the case of a user who use a cable to connect EV3 brick, WIFI settings could be updated in that way, but how to redistribute Java?
I am not sure if we could have a image uploaded in some repository with that dependency (Java). I am not sure frankly.

@Andy, What is your opinion?
