0.8.0-alpha release

Postby lawrie » Mon Mar 24, 2014 3:10 pm

The 0.8.0-alpha release is out.

The main new feature is a new SD card installer from Andy. You no longer have to get involved with writing image files to an SD card. You can now just unzip and copy files to an empty SD card, provided that it is formatted as FAT32.

If you wan't to use a card you used for a previous version of leJOS you will need to repartition it or use the image file sd500.img in sd500.zip (see the download site) to reformat your SD card with a 500Mb FAT32 partition.

For future releases, no more formatting, partitioning or writing image files to your SD card should be necessary.

There is a utility for Microsoft Windows users in ev3tools called EV3SDCard which will write the files to an empty FAT32 SD card for you, and do some checks. It was not mentioned in the Wiki, as new users will not have Eclipse set up when they are creating their SD card.

The release also cures a bug that was related to Linux kernel shared memory, where stale data was sometimes returned from sensors when switching modes. It also has some bug clearances and a few improved icons in the menu.

Let us know of any problems.

Do you have a file called uImage in the root directory of the SD card if you do and the EV3 is not at least booting and showing the leJOS logo then you almost certainly have problems with your SD card layout. What SD card are you using? If uImage is not in the root directory then you may not have unzipped the zip file correctly. If uImage is there and it will still not boot then please follow the instructions given in the Wiki for re-partitioning your SD card using the sd500.zip file:
https://sourceforge.net/p/lejos/wiki/Cr ... SD%20card/

Worked perfectly for me. I reformatted my entire SD card to fat32, unzipped / copied the files per the directions in the wiki, and booted. It did take a little while (~10 minutes? I didn't actually time it) for the first boot scripts to finish the repartition / resize / format, etc, but then the system came right up.

Overall, a very nice new install process, and great for those poor sods stuck on windows. :)

Keep up the good work!

Hi jorrge, It looks like you are using the 0.8.0 SD card but 0.7.0 in Eclipse, and that you have rebuild ev3classes with its build.xml and copied it to the EV3. You need to switch Eclipse to the 0.8.0 tag and rebuild ev3classes and EV3Menu.

Dear didif,

I experience the same problem you have reported before.
What did you do to solve the problem?
Somehow I do not get the meaning of "change a tf card".

Many thanks for your help.

I can't get this working for some reason. Upon starting from the SD card the brick only displays "Mindstorms starting..".
I waited for some 20 minutes but nothing happend.
Perhaps there is some help around....

I closely followed the wiki description. Here is my layout of the SD card:
DISKPART> list volume

Volume ### Bst Bezeichnung DS Typ Größe Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 E DVD-ROM 0 B Kein Medi
Volume 1 I Service NTFS Partition 5000 MB Fehlerfre System
Volume 2 C System NTFS Partition 48 GB Fehlerfre Startpar
Volume 3 D DATA NTFS Partition 184 GB Fehlerfre
* Volume 4 F SD500 FAT32 Wechselmed 491 MB Fehlerfre

F:\>dir
Datenträger in Laufwerk F: ist SD500
Volumeseriennummer: 9CB2-DD4B

Verzeichnis von F:\

26.03.2014 17:41 <DIR> lejos
24.03.2014 13:48 13.731.541 lejosimage.bz2
24.03.2014 13:48 9.338.332 uImage
24.03.2014 13:48 2.000.072 uImageStandard
24.03.2014 13:48 12 version
26.03.2014 07:42 33.430.777 ejre-7u51-fcs-b13-linux-arm-sflt-headless-18_dec_2013.tar.gz
5 Datei(en), 58.500.734 Bytes
1 Verzeichnis(se), 455.462.912 Bytes frei

The card is a Transcend 8GB Micro SD class 10 card.
I used it as delivered with a preformatted 8GB fat32 filesystem. I also used the SD500 approach. Both with the same result.

If there is anybody having a hint how to proceed, I would be very happy as I am out of my wits right now.

Regards,

Matthias

Found the problem. I was on firmware 1.04H for getting the Edimax WLAN Dongle to work.
I resetted my brick to V1.03H and that did the trick.

Now I am looking forward to explore leJOS further...

Do I understand correctly? After changing the Lego firmware to 1.04H, leJOS doesn't boot anymore?

With firmware 1.04H the first installation process did not start according to the WIKI entry for creation of a bootable SD card. Meaning the formatting of the sd card etc.
I have not switched back to firmware 1.04H to check if leJOS would boot or not.
If that would be of any help I could try it out and report the result.

Well, it's bad enough that leJOS wouldn't install. Are you sure, the SD card you used was the same both times? I'm pretty surprised that changing the Lego firmware affects whether the leJOS installation process works or not.
